Belt-Drive Opener Repair: preparing for the visit

Garage Doors · Brampton, Ontario

Ceiling-mounted garage-door opener with a red release cord, a blue stepladder below and a cordless drill on a workbench.

After the power came back you pulled the red cord to get the car out. Since reconnecting, the door stops short of the floor, and no amount of turning the limit adjustment brings it the rest of the way down.

Worth answering before the call

What make and model is printed on the motor head, and roughly how old is it? Is there a new noise, and where along the rail does it come from? Can you send a photograph along the rail showing the belt, and one of the label?

I pulled the red cord during a power cut. Could that have caused this?

It can, if the door was open or out of balance when it was released. The release itself disconnects the trolley from the belt, so a falling door does not throw its weight onto the drive; the real risk is the door itself crashing down and damaging the tracks, hinges or panels. Nothing about the cord itself is harmful; it is designed to be used. The habit to keep is to release the door only when it is closed.

What does out of phase mean, and why does my door stop short?

When the belt has been off the sprocket, or the motor has run without it, the motor's idea of where the door is no longer matches where the trolley sits. The door then stops short at one end however the limits are turned. The technician lifts the belt off, runs the sprocket to its closed position, refits the belt with the trolley at the closed end and relearns the limits.
